FJ Project – Fall 2017

YSFPB has recently assembled a fleet of 12 FJ dinghies. These 2 person sloops (main & jib) are commonly used in High School and College sailing programs. They are also great instructional boats for junior sailors and one-design racers for adult sailors.

The hulls and rigging sat unused (in the sun) for many years. The fiberglass hulls are heavily oxidized, but are cleaning up very nicely with a lot of ‘elbow grease’ from volunteers. Hardware is in good shape and most blocks, pins, shackles, wires, etc. are operational. Experts have determined halyards & control lines must be replaced. These bits & pieces add up but we are trying to be smart & economical to safely prepare boats for many years of sailing.

The big financial hurdle is Sails and Dollies—both required to put boats to use. We are seeking larger dollar donations to fund the purchase of these 2 high cost items. We have received quotes of $500 for Main & Jib sail sets that should last 5+ year of regular use. Properly fit dollies are required to make boats very easy to launch/retrieve and they are about $500 each.
